Additional Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives Information

A brilliant new guide to understanding the origins of codependence and the path to recovery by a nationally recognized authority on dependency and addiction.

In this fresh new look at codependence, Pia Mellody traces the origins of this illness back to childhood, describing a whole range of emotional, spiritual, intellectual, physical, and sexual abuses. Because of these earlier experiences, codependent adults often lack the skills necessary to lead mature lives and have satisfying relationships.

Recovery from codependence comes from clearing up the toxic feelings left over from childhood and learning to reparent oneself by intervening on the adult symptoms of codependence. Central to Mellody's concept is the idea of the "precious child" that needs healing within each adult. She creates a framework for identifying codependent behavior and describes an effective approach to recovery that includes both therapy and self-help processes. Designed to be used with her new workbook for codependents, Breaking Free, this is a powerful tool for understanding the nature of codependence.

What Customers Say About Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives:

If you have or have a loved one or even a friend who has a codependence problem or a possible resulting substance abuse problem or who has failed at every twelve step program they've tried, I can't recommend this book highly enough. If you are in a harmful relationship and can't get out. It was hard for me to realize I might have a problem. If you're more worried about how others feel than how you feel. It took a very good friend, someone I trusted, to make me get up the gumption to buy this book. It has helped me. If you constantly compromise your values to avoid rejection. If you often try to help others and feel rejected when they don't want your help and yes, if you have a substance abuse problem, then this book just might help you like it helped me

It is overwhelming to realize what I have to overcome but this book also gave me the much needed reassurance that I can get there. This book more than any other helped me to spot the very subtle, covert abuse in my family. I can't wait to read more of Pia Mellody's books. It also woke me out of a lot of denial and minimization about my past. I had light bulb moments constantly as I devoured this book. I found her writing to be clearer and more encouraging than Melody Beattie's Codependent No More. I am so grateful I found this book and Pia Mellody.

A great book to recommend clients, due to its simplicity in explaining concepts complemented with the use of stories. I have recommended it to many of my clients who have greatly benefitted from the book's proufound truths as it pushes them towards introspection and self-awareness. A great book to recommend to parents to equip them with skills to aid their children's optimal emotional and psychological development. Personally, I have gained insight into my own codependence and ways to overcome it in my quest to be a more effective therapist and healthy individual.

What I liked about this book is the honesty how the author talks. Took where I needed to go and helped me to go at my pace. I think this book is wonderful for all those who are dealing with codependency. I'm going to get the workbook too.

Excellent resource to both identifying the problem causing the destruction in your life (codependency) and how to seek the methods needed to understand and correct the early-in-life issues so that you can truly "get a life". Well written, easy to digest and extremely informative.
